Arusha

Mntoni River Lodge - Sunday 26 April 2026

Mntoni means River, so Tom's place is translated as River River Lodge.

When I was here three years ago it was halfway complete and it's been finished beautifully. 




The accommodation is mud rondavals and my room was lovely, with a corridor to Maretha's.



We had drinks and dinner with Tom and Lucas.


Monday 27 April 2026

After an early start and breakfast with Tom, the driver for Ndutu collected us and took us to Raymonds home near Sable square. 

We looked around his sawmill. He builds the most beautiful lodges, including all the furniture.  He showed us around.

Lucas came with us, fibrulator on board to give first aid lessons to the staff at Ndutu.



We passed through a roadblock where the policeman made sure I wasn't here working without a Visa.

Baghayo is just as I remember it.  Tranquility, looking out over the hills.




I cooled off with a swim, and then we relaxed chatting to Cecilia and Romano, Reggi's son (the owner).

Wednesday 22 April 2026 I caught an uber to the airport, dropped off my laden suitcases with equipment for the lodge (and wine) and spent the day working from the airport lounge. I feel like Ethiopian airways standard has dropped. I had to ask for headphones, was two hours before offered anything to eat or drink, the movie kept jumping back to the beginning and playing adverts. Could have been better. But the clouds were fantastic!! My hotel stsy in Addis was ar Sunspot hotel. Got the transfer there with a few others and had dinner (just some salad for me) with Casey, a lovely young French girl who is studying in Cape Town. It's always nice having a travel buddy and we hung out until saying goodbye at our boarding gates next morning.  23 April 2026 Addis is full of construction. The large shopping buildings reminds me of Asia. I stepped outside our hotel this morning to look around and a crazy lady was shouting at me in Oromo I think - but I understood when she said "Fuck You...

Ngorogoro National Park

Fideli came to fetch us and we piled our luggage into the landrover and crammed in for the ride into the park. Driving along the rim of the crater is so beautiful. Thick green jungle. I just love it - only comparison I've seen is the jungle in Borneo. Maretha and I were being dropped at Dr Ingela's house,  the beautiful Lion researcher from Kope Lion. Our first animal sighting :) Ingela was still out getting soaked in the rain up the mountains but we offloaded what wasn't going to the lodge and couldn't resist having a  photo session with the magnificent crater in the background.  Fideli Emma I got the best room in the house with a view into the crater. Ingela soon got home and we drank wine and chatted before making dinner. The tree hyrax were singing for us while we ate dinner.  It rained heavily in the night - a lovely sound made loud by the roof. Tuesday 28 April 2026 Had a lovely slow morning in this magical spot.   Thursday 23 April 2026 It's under 3 hours flight and I got a glimpse of Kilimanjaro.  It was beautifully green flying over Tanzania. Arrived safely at Kilimanjaro International Airport, between Moshi and Arusha, I and got a surprise when they asked for my yellow fever vaccine. I'd forgotten about this but remember finding my vaccine book at the last minute.  Did I pack it??  The last pocket of many in my bags had it - phew!!  I have two very full, very bags with my clothes, gifts, lots of wine and heavy things for the lodge. I split the wine equally but put both electrical appliances in one bag. First win was that they only asked for that bag to be checked. I heard them telling the guy next to me that duty is payable if value of bag contents is over 50 dollars. I was fine, but would be believe that.  I confused him and myself with much conversions of the cost of the blenders from rands to dollars and convinced him they were inexpensive items.
